With this type of excision, the Dermatologist removes sequential layers of tissue and examines them under a microscope to ensure that all of the malignant tissue has been removed, sparing as much surrounding normal tissue as possible.

This type of surgery is usually reserved for specific areas, such as on areas of the face, which may benefit from the most minimal excision possible to limit the deformity.
